Building a Connected Legal Community: Highlights of WOLEP's Real Estate Law Practice Inaugural Roundtable

The roundtable was attended by legal professionals from various countries, such as Ms. Caterina Caput (WOLEP member, Italy), Mr. Teo Ranić (Croatia), Ms. Andjela Rajković (Montenegro), Mr. Mohamadou Aminou (Rwanda), Mr. Kamil Bechta and Ms. Magdalena Sobolewska (both from Poland), Mr. Strahinja Selakovic (Serbia), Mr. Mihai Deleanu, Ms. Irina Horoi, Mr. Daniel Calcan, Ms. Elena Vladu, Mr. Romeo Cosma, (all from Romania), and Mr. Fokalbo Cogito (Chad). The purpose of the roundtable was to encourage a collaborative approach to the representation and management of properties across various regions in the real estate industry. Since WOLEP has two established practice areas, as of June 8, 2023, with an additional one soon to be launched, this was an opportunity for members to identify collaboration opportunities and build better relationships with other professionals on the network.
Discussion and Future Implications
Ms. Carmen Cârcotă, the Practice Area Coordinator, with over seven years in the field, emphasized the goals of WOLEP's Real Estate Law Practice. Firstly, to foster a community of lawyers with a shared interest in real estate transactions, secondly, to create an expression forum for members of the Real Estate Law Practice of WOLEP, and lastly, to provide continuous personal development opportunities for members while helping them identify business opportunities alongside their peers. During the event, Ms. Cârcotă facilitated a discussion allowing attendees to provide valuable insights into their specific legal roles in the real estate market. They discussed the particularities of national law regulating real estate in their country, the functions and activities performed by real estate lawyers, and provided information about the different stages of real estate transactions.
By leveraging this industry-wide collaboration, WOLEP members could better understand the current situation in various markets where they currently operate or are looking to expand. They established relationships with local legal and industry experts and understood the specific cultural nuances affecting transactions. This helped further their practice and achieve the meeting’s goals.
Conclusion
The WOLEP Real Estate Roundtable was a success as it drew attention to the complex nature of the real estate industry and offered a valuable platform for exchanging knowledge and information. The roundtable achieved its objective of promoting collaboration between legal experts in the real estate industry from different jurisdictions worldwide and helped build relationships amongst the WOLEP Real Estate Law Practice members.
